Buying Guide: Which Dog Trailer Configuration Is Right for Your Business?

Buying a trailer? Two key factors should influence your choice:

  1. How much you need to carry (carry capacity)
  2. Where you need to take it (site and road access)

The right axle configuration should match the loads you move most often and the roads and networks you operate on.

Configuration Best for Carry Capacity Is this Dog Trailer right for you?
2 Axle Dog Trailer (Tandem axle) Lighter site work and tighter access 9.5 tonne You run local civil, landscaping, and farm jobs with smaller payloads and need easier manoeuvring on congested sites and narrow roads.
3 Axle Dog Trailer (Tri axle) Civil and farm loads 16.8 tonne Your core work is earthmoving, construction, and agriculture and you want the best balance of tonnes per trip and general network access.
4 Axle Dog Trailer (Quad axle) High volume haulage on approved networks 25.0 tonne You move large volumes of bulk materials (quarry to site, big civil packages, large farm movements) and can operate on approved length networks to maximise productivity.

Industries & Applications

Heavy-duty and versatile, Beavertail dog trailers serve as the backbone of transport operations across several key sectors:

  • Earthmoving & Construction: Ideal for moving heavy excavators, skid steers, and loaders or carting bulk site materials.
  • Agriculture: Built tough for moving farming machinery, implements, and bulk produce across rural terrain.
  • Commercial Freight & Plant Hire: Designed for high-tonnage equipment transport requiring precision manoeuvrability around tight site access points.

What is the Difference Between a Dog Trailer and a Pig/Tag Trailer?

Choosing between dog trailers, pig trailers and tag trailers depends on your terrain, load distribution, manoeuvrability requirements and site constraints.

Feature Dog Trailer Pig Trailer Tag Trailer
Steering Steerable front axle group, allowing the front wheels to pivot independently. Fixed central axle group with a drawbar, no steerable front axle. No front axle group or front steering.
Coupling Hinged drawbar connection to the towing vehicle. Rigid drawbar connection to the towing vehicle. Couples to a pintle or ring feeder.
Manoeuvrability Highly manoeuvrable. Will track cleanly through winding roads and tight roundabouts. Requires wider turning arcs than a dog trailer. Simpler configuration than a dog trailer, making it practical where manoeuvrability is less critical.
Typical payload Up to 25 tonnes carry capacity. Generally suited to light to medium haulage. Suitable for applications where a low cost configuration is preferred.

Can a Dog Trailer Be Used with Any Truck?

No. A dog trailer is a heavy vehicle combination, not a car or light vehicle trailer, and it must be matched to the truck’s ratings.

Take into consideration:

  1. The truck’s gross combination mass (GCM), towbar rating, and coupling type set the limits for what trailer you can legally and safely run.
  2. At Beavertail we can build a drawbar and coupling to suit your rigid truck, so the trailer is compatible with your existing setup.
  3. Because dog trailers are heavy duty trailers for construction, agriculture, and bulk haulage, they’re intended for licensed heavy vehicles, not for cars or light commercials.

If you’re unsure, share your truck model, axle count, and current towbar details and our experts can help confirm the correct spec before build. Contact us today and we’ll help find the right dog trailer setup for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are dog trailers legal on all Australian roads?

Yes, when built and operated to the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) and state/territory registration rules. Key limits include axle mass, overall length, and drawbar length.

At Beavertail Trailers, our engineers design dog trailers to meet these requirements so they can operate on general access roads. Some routes and sites still have restrictions, so we recommend confirming your specific network and access before purchase.

How do dog trailers perform on rough or off-road sites?

Dog trailers are built to handle uneven, unsealed, and congested work sites better than many fixed drawbar setups. The front steering axle group and independent axles improve tracking and load distribution over uneven ground.

Ultimately, reducing bog risk and making tight, congested sites easier to get around than fixed drawbar setups.
