What Is a Quad Axle Trailer?

A quad axle trailer is a sturdy transport platform made up of four axles positioned together to maximise weight capabilities. By spreading the weight across 16 individual tyres rather than 8 or 12, a quad axle trailer lets operators transport massive payloads without compromising the stability of the vehicle.

Distributing weight over four axle assemblies increases legal payload limits, reduces strain on individual tyres and suspension components, and improves vehicle tracking under heavy loads.

Manufactured at our Ballarat facility using high-grade Australian steel, Beavertail quad axle trailers are designed to meet Australian Design Rules (ADR) and National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) guidelines. They are widely used across civil infrastructure, heavy plant hire, mining and bulk transport operations.

Tri Axle vs Quad Axle Trailers

For high-tonnage haulage, choosing between a 3-axle (tri axle) and 4-axle (quad axle) configuration comes down to total payload requirements and axle group mass limits. Bigger than both our 2 axle and tri axle trailers, the quad axle is the choice for hauling bulky payloads:

• Maximum Payload Capacity: Our 4 axle dog trailer has an ATM of up to 33.0 tonnes and a carry capacity of up to 25.0 tonnes, so you can move heavier machinery in a single pass.
• Maximum Mass Limits: For higher-capacity applications, spread quad axle configurations (such as a 1.2 m/2.4 m/1.2 m axle spread) can be engineered to provide increased axle group capacity, subject to vehicle design, tyre and suspension ratings, road access, and the relevant PBS, permit or Class 1 approval requirements.
• Improved Weight Distribution: The twin-axle front dolly provides a wide footprint, which protects your truck’s chassis, reduces axle strain and preserves tyre life.
• Load Equalisation: Four axles distribute weight more efficiently across the frame, reducing tyre wear and road impact during long hauls.
• Braking Performance: Braking forces are shared across four axle assemblies, giving better stopping performance and control under heavy payloads.
