What Is a Pig Trailer?
A pig trailer is a truck trailer with a single axle group positioned near the centre of the load. It connects to the towing truck via a rigid drawbar and a pintle, Bartlett ball or Ringfeder coupling, with the truck carrying part of the trailer’s load through the coupling.
The name comes from the trailer quite literally ‘piggybacking’ part of its weight onto the towing truck through the drawbar and coupling, with the truck carrying a portion of the trailer’s load.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much can a single axle pig trailer carry?
Our single axle pig trailer has a carry capacity of up to 6.6 tonnes, with an ATM of up to 10 tonnes. Actual payload is dependent on the trailer’s tare weight and the specific configuration, so it’s important to confirm the final specifications for your setup.
Why is it called a pig trailer?
The term refers to the trailer’s design, where the towing truck supports some of the trailer’s load. This distinguishes it from a dog trailer, which is designed to carry its own weight.
What is the difference between a pig trailer and a dog trailer?
Unlike a dog trailer, which is connected to the truck via a drawbar and supported by its own front axle, a pig trailer is connected directly to the towing vehicle and is supported at the front by the truck’s tow coupling.
